GRANNY McFANNY LESSON PLAN Grade Level K-3
SUMMARY The wild haired, adventurous Granny McFanny travels from the circus to the sea. Along the way Granny dances the salsa, pulls rabbits from her hat and lands in the splits. Kids delight in Granny’s humorous antics and will leave readers of all ages with a smile.
STIMULATE CONVERSATION If you have a Granny McFanny book available read it aloud, then discuss the story. Make sure to document your answers on a chalkboard. Here are some sample questions:
What did Granny do on some of her adventures? What was your favorite adventure? What type of story was this? Happy? Sad? Did it make you laugh? Granny McFanny is a world traveler. Where should she go next? What would she be doing?
WRITING ASSIGNMENT Using the answers given during discussion, have the students write a Granny scene. The scene can be two lines and up to a paragraph in length. It does not need to rhyme. The scene should also tell where Granny is, what job she has taken, or what she is doing.
Example: Granny McFanny threw a party with balloons of blue and read. Streamers flew around the room and landed on her head. Non-rhyme example: Granny McFanny went to Hawaii. She went swimming in the sea.
LET’S ILLUSTRATE AND COLOR! Once the scene has been written students can illustrate and color their scene using bright crayons, markers, or paint.
SHARE IT. Have the children take turns reading their scene and explain their supporting illustrations. Children may also share their original ideas or a copy with the author by mailing to: Lewis Kimberly, Granny McFanny Author, c/o Stephens Press, 1111 W. Bonanza Road, Las Vegas, Nevada 89106. Or, email misskimberly@lewiskimberly.com.
BUILD CONFIDENCE. Remind the students that they are confident people. Like Granny McFanny, they too can be who they want to be.
Teachers may copy for distribution. |
